Hitting the street with Sparkies Streetside Diner
Food trucks are not a new phenomenon. They’ve been gracing the streets of large cities across North America for a long time, bringing restaurant quality food to the masses, at crazy hours, in unexpected places. San Francisco has food truck parks and even food truck agencies that manage everything from licensing to advertising. Here in Lethbridge, our food trucks are still, for the most part, a word of mouth operation. While they are becoming a regular sight around town, they don’t have nearly the following their big city counterparts do.
I finally was able to track down Sparkies Streetside Diner yesterday. I’ve heard so many good things about their food, I was more than ready to give them a try. We ordered a couple of things, first we ordered the pork tenderloin naan bread wrap. One bite in and I knew why it’s one of their most popular items. The pork is extremely tender and very well seasoned. Arugula is the perfect spicy compliment to the sweet mango salsa this is served with. The salsa itself is so tasty I could eat it as a salad all on it’s own. The naan bread is lightly seasoned (yummm, garlic), warmed, and makes the perfect carrier for all of this deliciousness.
We also ordered Freddie Funder Fries, What an interesting mix of flavors! Home cut fries are crisped to perfection and topped with jalapeno havarti (one of my favorite melting cheeses), hot brown gravy, and topped with a HUGE pile of thinly sliced steak. Usually they add pico de gallo too, but since the mister is allergic to onions, we opted to go without.
Their servings are very generous, and their prices are very fair. We’ll keep following Sparkies as their menu seems to change. Sparkies is doing comfort food right.
Just a little update since my last visit, I had the pleasure of visiting the truck again today (I know, I just ate there a couple of weeks ago, don’t judge). Today I had the butternut squash ravioli’s with red pepper sauce and the perogies. I shared the with a workmate, which was a good thing since the servings are good sized!
