Sometimes you find an establishment that really knows what they’re doing, and today we found a great example of that, COM & EAT Mobile Concession & Catering in Taber, Alberta. They’re really establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the food truck scene in Southern Alberta, serving up, “authentic and delicious Vietnamese cuisine with a modern flair.” Their menu is concise, with the right amount of variety. They serve up the basics, fresh food, full of flavor for fair prices.
We started with salad rolls, very fresh, made with both chicken and shrimp loads of cilantro and a splash of basil. These have the right noodle to other stuff ratio, though the wrappers didn’t fare too well during the walk home. The only comment I can make, and it’s not negative, is that they could have used more fresh basil (that’s simply a personal preference).
For our main, we had Bun Ba Mon with Thit Nuong, Ga Nuong Sa, and Cha Gio, better known as rice vermicelli with shredded pork, lemon grass chicken, and spring rolls. WINNER! Their meat is well seasoned, marinated and very tender. I’m pretty sure there was a touch of lemon grass in the pork too. The spring rolls were crispy and delicious, not oily, a common spring roll dilemma.
I may have squealed when I spied Vietnamese Iced Coffee on the menu. It’s my favorite treat and one I haven’t found done well in southern Alberta, until now (I almost went back for another one). It was strong and sweet, the perfect drink on a warm day. We also had Pineapple Bubble Tea with tapioca balls. They have a variety of flavors, the pineapple was nice and fresh, sweet, but not overly so. Next time I’d like try the green tea or taro.
Their mission is, “to provide our customers with a unique Mobile Concession experience by offering authentic, high quality and delicious Vienamese cuisine in a timely manner and at an affordable price.” I’ve got to say, their doing it right and we can hardly wait to visit them again! If you’re looking for great Vietnamese food in Southern Alberta, you’ve got to check them out. Their schedule is on Facebook.
